After their 2-0 Alexis Sanchez inspired win over Sunderland, Arsenal kept their slim hopes of a top four finish alive, with just one match go.
But there is still (some) hope yet!
There are several possibilities that could see Wenger’s men in the Champions League next season:
1. Catch City
Arsenal MUST win against Everton and hope City lose to Watford. This must also be a big win, as Arsenal would also need a seven-goal swing on goal difference.
Thus, Arsenal 5 - 0 Everton and Watford 2 - 0 Man City.
2. Leapfrog Liverpool
This is probably the simplest, as Arsenal need to win against Everton and Liverpool lose or draw against relegated Middlesbrough. The Gunners would then automatically qualify for the UEFA CL.
3. Beat Liverpool on goal difference/goals scored
Here, Arsenal can reach the top four without having to win their final match. Should Liverpool lose, Arsenal would only require one point and a two-goal swing.
Thus, Arsenal 2 - 2 Everton and Liverpool 0 - 2 Middlesbrough.
Both teams would be tied on points and goal difference, but Arsenal would qualify, thanks to their higher goals scored.
A goalless draw at the Emirates would require Liverpool to lose by three or more goals.
4. End of season play-off
Stranger things have happened in football, and this is quite unlikely, but a possibility. Here, it would require both Liverpool and Arsenal to end up on exactly the same points, same number of goals scored and have an equal goal difference.
Thus, Arsenal 1 - 1 Everton and Liverpool 0 - 2 Middlesbrough.
Arsenal and Liverpool would then have to compete in an end of season play-off at a neutral venue to decide which of them is higher in the standings.
The above make up a setting of what is expected to be a thrilling end to the 2016/17 Premier League, as both teams would want to play in Europe’s top competition, the Champions League.
