Will Wanyama and Co. fall victims of their own success in 2017

Despite failing to get bag any silverware last season, Tottenham Hotspur proved among one of best team in 2016 as the Londoners side came second best to Champions Chelsea in the league campaign.

A run that exceeded expectations of many was hinged among a number of personality and the team's resilient spirit.

Mauricio Pochettino, Harry Kane, the season golden boot winner were among the personality central to the success and also not any less to the role of summer signing,Victor Wanyama.

Bargain buy

Termed among the bargains buys of the season, Kenyan Victor Wanyama proved just what Spurs needed in his first season at White Hart Lane.

A trusted midfield lieutenant of Mauricio Pochettino during his days at Southampton, Wanyama was once again back to his best at centre of park proving faithful to the detailed instructions of his manager.

Wanyama 2016 stats

No doubt that 2016 ranks as his best season yet in his three seasons so far in the English Premier League(EPL). A dream home debut against Crystal Palace saw the robust Kenyan adjust with ease to life in London. A home debut goal opened a fine streak for  the Kenyan who went on to score up to five goals in all competitions.

In addition, the combative recorded progress on his earlier increasing disciplinary case.

The midfielder managed to shun dismissal despite making up to 30 starts in the league in relation to three he got the season before.

However with the EPL that seldom stays on past success and achievement, Spurs and Wanyama are in for yet another demanding new season. A run in to fuether test the team resolve and depth.

It kicks off at newcomers. Newcastle United this Sunday.

Spurs have barely made a shout in pundits team to watch. They are the only team not to sign any player despite seeing dependable defender Kyle Walker sold to rivals Man City. Fair enough, Spurs were never the likeliest candidates for  a runners-up position when they managed it last season.

They head to the opener with a challenge of a lean squad against team that have taken their good time to bolster their ranks just in readiness for the season.

Winning the EPL!

For the likes of Wanyama, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Kane Delle Ali and Christian Eriksen who shot Spurs to within reach of their first title in many years, 2017 is another season to prove their character, sustain the improved run and possibly achieve what they failed to do after that anticlimactic finish to 2016: winning the league title.

Will they be victims of raising the bar too high!
