Joey Barton blasts Newcastle boss

Former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has launched an astonishing attack on Rafa Benitez, accusing him of moaning and being too negative.

The Geordies are without a goal or a point after two games with Benitez claiming after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield, promotion in May feels “a long time ago.” Benitez admits he’s unhappy at the backing he’s received from owner Mike Ashley, having been given the impression he’d have received much more than the £36m spent so far to strengthen his squad.

-It doesn’t help when the manager is out there moaning, clearly unhappy with the situation. That definitely festers out on the pitch. They do need some investment. When you come up, you do need investment but there is also a case that Benitez needs to get on with it. You’ve got what you’ve got. OK, you maybe need to keep it private in terms of “can we get bodies in? If you’re a player and you hear the manager moaning about investment, it doesn’t inspire confidence because he’s saying you’re not good enough, said the outspoken Scouser, currently banned from football after breaking FA rules on betting.

It’s led to fears that the Spaniard could walk out despite him announcing on the eve of the season he was committed to the club. Barton believes the time has come for Benitez to keep his mouth shut and focus on the job in hand.
