Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has reportedly revealed that the club failed to sign West Brom defender Jonny Evans because they ‘could not afford’ him.
Pep was speaking in a press conference preceding their emphatic 5-0 win against Liverpool, where the tactician disclosed that Baggies chief Tony Pulis insisted that the Cityzens pay an absurd £35m for the centre-back.
The Spaniard had identified the Irishman as the perfect candidate to give current top option John Stones a run for his money but failed to convince Etihad chiefs to part with a little more than the £220m they had already spent this summer to acquire the likes of full-backs Benjamin Mendy, Danilo and Kyle Walker, midfielder Bernardo Silva and goalie Ederson Moraes.
The tactician can however not claim to have all that he needs at his disposal as the former Bayern Munich chief looks forward to quickly putting his trophy-less debut season behind him.
