Manchester United are ready to offer Juan Mata to Inter Milan in the hope they will land Joao Mario, according to reports.
United spent the summer pursuing Inter Milan forward Perisic, but were ultimately unable to lure the Croatia international to Old Trafford.
At the time the Red Devils were prepared to offer the Serie A giants Anthony Martial, with the France international struggling to earn the trust of Jose Mourinho last season.
However, Martial’s form means Manchester United have opted against renewing their interest in Perisic.
Instead, Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport says Mourinho has now set his sights on luring Perisic’s Inter team-mate Mario to the Premier League.
Mario joined Inter from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2016.
However, he has struggled to live up to expectations at the San Siro, meaning a move away could be in the offing.
United are eying midfield reinforcements with the future of Marouane Fellaini up in the air.
The much-maligned Belgium international has been in fine fettle this season but has snubbed the offer of a contract extension with his current deal expiring in the summer.
Corriere dello Sport says, however, any deal could see United lose Mata.
The Spain international is a popular figure at the club and has helped them win three major trophies since arriving from Chelsea in January 2014.
Yet he has fallen down the pecking order in recent times with Jesse Lingard now preferred on the right flank.
Inter, however, want to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead, meaning Mata may end up staying put.
