Manchester City missed out on signing Riyad Mahrez but he could join the Citizens in summer.
Following Leroy Sane’s injury, Pep Guardiola has been chasing the Leicester City winger and many expected the deal to be done on deadline day of January transfer. Despite Mahrez handing in a transfer request, he could not be allowed to leave. City’s attempt to sign the Algerian failed as the Foxes wanted £95 million, a valuation which emerged as a stumbling block for the deal to materialize.
Manchester City bound?
Boss Pep Guardiola has hinted that his club could move for the star in the summer. The ex-Bayern coach spoke of his interest to Mahrez but admitted the deal was “not possible.”
“He's a Leicester player. Everybody knows we were trying but we cannot afford, in this moment, this amount of what they are asking. I understand perfectly. We tried to do it in the summertime, we tried to do it now, but like summer, they locked the door and we can go to the summer and holidays. It was not possible. With [Aymeric] Laporte yes, with the other one no. We are going to see what happens in the summer," said Guardiola.
The 24 year old was not involved in Leicester’s match against Everton on Wednesday night due to reports linking him to exit. His side suffered a 1-2 defeat, with ex-Arsenal star Theo Walcott netting twice while Jamie Vardy scored the consolation goal for the visitors.
