'Referee from hell' to oversee Gor Mahia, Esperance return tie

Contentious referee, Joshua Bondo from Botswana will oversee the CAF Champions League return leg pitting Kenya's Gor Mahia against Esperance de Tunis on March 17th in Tunisia.

Bondo will be assisted by countrymen Kitso Sibanda and Meshack Medupi. The former will act as the first referee while Medupi has been assigned the duties of the second referee.

During a World Cup qualifiers pitting Zambia and Nigeria, he ruled out what appeared a genuine goal by Zambia’s Augustine Mulenga in the first half in Uyo which Chipolopolo needed to win to take control of their campaign. The Super Eagles won that match 1-0.

The center referee was expelled from COSAFA tournament in 2017 after denying Zimbabwe what looked like two genuine penalties against Madagascar. COSAFA organizers also condemned his level of officiating. At one point he was referred to as 'referee from hell.'

"Controversial refereeing calls overshadowed the top-of-the-table clash in group B at the COSAFA Cup as Zimbabwe and Madagascar played out a goalless draw on Wednesday at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace,’’ a release from the organizers read then.

The first leg of the CAF CL ended 0-0 at Machakos.
