Premier League stars itching to leave their clubs this summer
Quite the busy transfer window? Money being splashed around like nobody’s business... Well it’s business for the agents and teams benefiting - but let’s take time and reflect on something different, shall we? For some players, the summer transfer window is a frustrating period of wanting to leave but not getting that dream move.
While, for instance, Romelu Lukaku got his wish of leaving Everton for a club competing in the Champions League with Manchester United, others haven't, yet, been quite so fortunate.
So, including Lukaku’s former team-mate, here are the most high-profile players looking to leave their Premier League clubs this summer.
6. Ross Barkley - Everton
This week reports emerged that Barkley (and no doubt his agent) is demanding £150,000-a-week to make a move to Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder so far hasn’t featured in any pre-season match because of a groin injury and it’s looking increasingly unlikely that he’ll be seen again in a Toffees shirt. He’s out of contract next summer, so the Merseyside outfit themselves might be eager to cash in. We’ll have to wait and see.
5. Virgil van Dijk - Southampton
Highly-regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, not so many knew of him until big clubs started showing interest. Van Dijk has surely made a mark ever since he joined the Saints from Celtic in 2015. The 26-year old has been ‘crying’ for a move away from the St. Mary’s for a while now, but it appears that the club is not willing to let go of their defensive enforcer.
On Friday, reports came in that the Dutchman had in effect gone on strike at Southampton in an attempt to force a transfer, after which new manager Mauricio Pellegrino responded by ordering the Holland international to train alone. It’s that serious.
4. Diego Costa - Chelsea
His name has been all over the place, and it’s getting annoying. Get him a team already!
Antonio Conte recently revealed that he told Costa he wasn’t a part of his future plans in January, much earlier than the striker himself suggested earlier this summer. He’s taking no part in Chelsea’s pre-season tour and is said to be working to secure a return to Atletico Madrid, despite the La Liga outfit currently serving a transfer ban.
Rumour has it that ‘spendthrift’ AC Milan are also interested in signing the Spanish striker. But honestly, he should just go China - in my opinion.
3. Riyad Mahrez - Leicester City
Mahrez - PFA Player of the year in 2015/16 also believes he deserves a better club. At the end of May, the Algerian released a statement detailing his desire to leave Leicester in the summer transfer window. He stated his ‘fierce ambitions’ like wanting to play in the Champions League have led him to make such a decision, but almost two months later and he is still a Foxes player. Sad.
The attacking midfielder is certainly in a difficult situation. Arsenal and Roma have been linked with a move.
2. Nemanja Matic - Chelsea
Like Costa, Matic has been left out of Chelsea’s 25-man pre-season squad, with reports stating Conte has told the midfielder to find a new club. Really Conte?
Manchester United have been trying to secure a deal, but a number of Italian sides are also interested, including champions Juventus. He’ll be itching to seal a move sooner rather than later, as he continues to miss out on valuable pre-season training.
1. Alexis Sanchez - Arsenal
We’ve all heard of him. The phenomenal Chilean.
Sanchez’s recent comments regarding his future suggests reports over the past few months have been correct – he does want out of Arsenal. At the beginning of this week the Chilean told Canal 13, -I've already taken my decision, but now I depend on Arsenal and to see what they want. With still no talk of a new contract, Gunner fans are right to be fearful that their star player is preparing to leave.
The 28-year old is seeking Champions League football, and a number of clubs are interested in him.
