Michy Batshuayi came from the bench to help Chelsea beat Watford 4-2 after a run of 3 winless matches. ‘Batman’ replaced Morata in the second half with the defending champions losing 2-1 and netted two goals rescuing the Blues from resilient Watford.
Chelsea needed a perfect response following a winless run of three games, two Premier League defeats in the hands of Manchester City and Crystal Palace as well as settling for a 3-3 draw with Roma in the Champions League. It was a bright start for the defending champions creating good chances in the opening minutes of play and managed to open the scoring in the 12th minute through Pedro.
It was a stunning goal from the Spaniard, with Hazard playing well down the right flank, before picking out Pedro at the top of the box and the 30 year old hit the ball, spinning through the air before hammering onto the crossbar on side and nestling in the bottom corner of the other. Five minutes later, the hosts could have made it 2-0 through Cesc Fabregas who was picked out by Morata on the left hand side of the field but Gomes came off his line and shut the Spaniard making a fingertip stop to deny him an easy goal.
With less than a minute to half time, Watford levelled the score through Abdoulaye Doucoure. It was a fine goal as Holebas delivered a long throw-in with almost the last action of the half time, which initially was headed away by Luiz but the rebound falling to the feet of Doucoure who hammered the ball through the box into the back of the net.
HT Chelsea 1-1 Watford
It was a good second half from both sides as they continued to look for a goal which could give any side a lead. Richarlison had a miss of the match and probably miss of the weekend four minutes into the second half. It was a superb cross for Richarlison who got sea of space and only needed to poke it home but his effort went wide. Seconds later Watford took the lead through Roberto Pereyra. A superb pass from Richarlison on the left of the box after a layoff from Deeney who found Pereyra in the space near the back of the post and the player made no mistake in firing home, over the body of Chelsea’s shot stopper.
Morata was taken off in the 61st minute, his place being taken by Mitchy Batshuayi who took ten minutes to put Chelsea level. Willian picked out Pedro on the right flank, with the Spaniard in turn floating the most inviting of balls in the box which Batshuayi rose to meet and fired a bullet header into the back of the net. Batshuayi could have netted the winner for the Blues as in the 82nd minute, Fabregas delivered a sliding ball from a set piece but the Belgium international skimmed past the post.
With only three minutes to play, Conte’s men took the lead through Azpilicueta, who has now been directly involved in more PL goals than any other defender this season. Willian delivered a superb ball with Batshuayi missing the ball which went to Azp who headed at the back post. It was a moment of jubilation at the Bridge as the defender kissed the badge in his celebration while Conte threw himself into the crowd.
In the final act of the game, super sub Batman made it 4-0 at the death. A poor pass from Bristos was blocked by Bakayoko, into the path of the Belgian in the box. Kabasele tried to muscle the striker off the ball but he stayed strong to poke home under Gomes.
