CECAFA: Zanzibar stuns Rwanda, pushes them towards elimination
Zanzibar shocked Rwanda downing the Amavubi 3-1 in a Cecafa group A match played on Tuesday 5 December at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Rwanda went into the game as favourites but were humbled by the minnows courtesy of goals from MUtadhir Yahya, Issa Juma and substitute Kassim Khamis. Muhadjiri Hakizimana scored the consolation goal for Rwanda.
The match was largely balanced in the early minutes as both teams strived to take charge of the game. As the clock ticked, Rwanda slowly took charge of the game pinning Zanzibar in their own half as they went all out in search of the opening goal with Nshuti Innocent, Muhadjiri Hakizimana and Maxime Sekamana leading onslaught.
They were however stunned in the 34th minute when Zanzibar took the lead through Azam FC midfielder Muthadir Yahya. A well floated ball from left-back Haji Mininya was headed home by Yahya who was lurking in the area, Rwanda keeper Yves Kimenyi could do little to save.
Rwanda started showing more attacking threat after going down and were denied the equalizer minutes later when Hakizimana Muhadjiri's shot came off the upright. Zanzibar took a goal lead to the break.
Two minutes after the restart, Rwanda equalized through Hakizmana who volleyed home from close range to give the Amavubi the much needed boost. The parity however lasted for just five minutes as Zanzibar capitalized on a defensive error to draw level in the 53rd minute through Issa Juma who fired home from inside the penalty area.
Rwanda went all out im search of an equalizer and a possible winning goal after the setback but were severally frustrated by the minnows who defended their lead resolutely.
Kassim Khamis sealed the win for Zanzibar in the 87th minute beating his marker before firing a low shot past Rwanda keeper.
This is the second loss for Rwanda after going down 0-2 to Kenya and are now starring at elimination. Zanzibar on the other hand begin their campaign with a vital win.
