Manchester United is monitoring Toby Alderweireld's situation at Tottenham as the defender continues to stall on a new contract.

Alderweireld, 28, is out of contract in under 18 months but his deal includes a one-year extension which is scheduled to be triggered in the summer of 2019. However, his contract also features a £25 million release clause which can be activated in the 2019 summer transfer window, albeit no later than 14 days before deadline day.

Although United manager Jose Mourinho has prioritied a central midfield signing, Alderweireld's contract stance is understood to be interesting United as they consider another central defensive signing.

Mourinho has previously shown interest in Spurs players, having identified Eric Dier as his preferred midfield target in the summer, but Spurs refused to consider selling the England international. Danny Rose was considered as a left-back option to replace Luke Shaw but the United defender is set to earn a new contract.

United bought Victor Lindelof for an initial £30.9 million from Benfica but M.E.N. Sport revealed Mourinho sought reassurances from his Portuguese contacts amid early concerns over the Sweden international. Lindelof has not featured in the Premier League since the New Year's Day win at Everton. Eric Bailly became Mourinho's first United signing in a £30m move from Villarreal in June 2016.

Mourinho and United would face intense competition for Alderweireld, who joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid for just £11.5m in 2015, and the Belgium international's representatives have held talks over new terms.

Alderweireld has not traveled with the Spurs squad to Turin for their Champions League round-of-16 first leg at Juventus on Tuesday night, despite declaring himself 'fit and ready', having returned from a three-month lay-off with a hamstring injury against Newport County last week.
