Chemelil Sugar wrapped up week six of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) in second place, registering an unlikely rise for a team that struggled throughout the 2017 season and defender Benjamin Oketch, attributes the surge to new coach Paul Odhiambo.

The coach joined the team from his previous role as Western Stima assistant coach, replacing Juma Abdalla who was relieved after a poor season with the team and Oketch says he has been a major unifying factor.

A 4 – 1 win over Nakumatt FC over the weekend saw Chemelil hit 11 points and stay in touch with league leaders Gor Mahia who are on 16 points and the defender is happy at the ease in which the coach has fitted in.

Beefed Up

“The coach is playing a very crucial role in keeping the team together. There are players who were here before and we have also beefed up with new blood and it was crucial to ensure these two groups gel.

“So he is a key uniting factor and has instilled a lot of confidence in us. We are working hard but I think his influence is also among factors pushing us,” he said.
