Croatia 2-1 England: How we rated the players

12 Jul 2018, 18:00

Croatia provided yet another dramatic extra time win last night, downing England 2-1 to reach Sunday's final. How did we rate the players?

Croatia

Danijel Subasic
Could have done better for Trippier's goal but redeemed himself with a wonder save from Kane. 6

Sime Vrsaljko
Assisted Perisic for Croatia's equalizer. Recovered from injury to make the starting XI and his manager will be delighted. 8

Dejan Lovren
Aggressive display from the Liverpool man but not his best game of the tournament. 6

Domagoj Vida
Was solid all game and that compensated for Lovren's off day. 7

Ivan Strinic
Got forward well and initiated attacks from leftfullback. 7

Luka Modric
After a slow start, the midfield schemer's influence grew and grew as the game wore on. 8

Marcelo Brozovic
Screened the midfield and linked the play effectively. 7

Ivan Rakitic
Showed touches of class in a slightly wider role alongside Modric and Brozovic. 7

Ante Rebic
Gave Ashley Young a torrid time with his aggression ands direct running. 7

Mario Mandzukic
Grew into the game, tested Pickford on numerous occasions and then scored the winner. Clutch player. 8

Ivan Perisic
Croatia’s best attacker on the day. Finished his chance like a striker and hit the foot of the post too. 8

England

Jordan Pickford
Made a wonderful save from Mandzukic before the striker had the last laugh by scoring the winner. No blame for either goal. 7

Kyle Walker
Put his body on the line but let Perisic go for the equaliser. 6

John Stones
Ball-watching for Mandzukic's winner but was composed and assured otherwise. 6

Harry Maguire
Came close to scoring again. This was a fine tournament for the Leicester man. 7

Kieran Trippier
Like Maguire, Trippier had an outstanding tournament. Scored the England goal and got forward with regularity. 8

Ashley Young
Struggled against the pace and directness of Rebic and got substituted. 5

Jordan Henderson
Covered every blade of grass and was ultimately substituted by Dier. 7

Dele Alli
Showed neat footwork and some nice touches, won the free kick that led to the goal but faded out of the game later on. 7

Jesse Lingard
A decent all-round display from the versatile Manchester United man, but could have done better with his chance to score. 6

Raheem Sterling
His pace was a threat to Croatia but the end product from Sterling was lacking, considering how brilliant he was at Manchester City last season. 6

Harry Kane
England's captain couldn't cap a brilliant tournament with a goal. Should have doubled England's lead with a half chance. 6
