Messi handed the Barcelona captaincy
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi has been handed the captain’s armband following the departure of Andreas Iniesta who joined Japanese side Vissel Kobe at the end of the 2017-2018 season.
Messi will be assisted by Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto all of whom graduated from the famed La Masia academy. The captaincy doesn’t come as a surprise with Messi serving as an assistant captain from 2015 when Xavi made the switch to Qatari club Al Sadd. Sergi Roberto climbs into the captaincy rank replacing Javier Mascherano who left Barcelona to join Chinese club Hebei China Fortune.
Sergi Roberto’s is also not a shock inclusion into the list after captaining the side on a number of occasions in their United States of America (USA) Pre-Season tour. German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen who joined the club back in 2014 was tipped to join the list of captains but surprisingly missed out. Messi will be hoping to lift his first trophy as captain on Sunday 12 August when they face Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup.
Messi will join the illustrious list of Barcelona captains that include:
- Carlos Puyol
- Andreas Iniesta
- Johan Cruyff
- Pep Guardiola
