Derby County manager Frank Lampard has revealed that he wanted to sign Ethan Ampadu on loan from Chelsea in the concluded transfer window.
The Wales international had an impressive debut season last season under former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte after making the move from League outfit Exeter City. Ampadu recently turned down a chance to represent Ghana as he made his senior debut for Wales in the 4-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League.
The Chelsea legend reveals that were it not for Sarri he would have landed the signature of the 18-year-old, “I looked at him (Ampadu). I spoke to the (Chelsea) manager and he told me he wants him in their squad, so it was a very short conversation.” Lampard has also been impressed with the current Chelsea manager, “I was very impressed with Sarri. I think he is a great manager, great character. He was very nice to me about it.”
Lampard also jokingly added that he cries when he sees Ampadu play, “Quite rightly, he probably wants Ampadu as part of his squad. He is a fantastic talent. It was a question (we asked), and we have fully moved on. I shed a tear when he played so well!”
