Julen Lopetegui has explained why star man Gareth Bale was withdrawn in the match against Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid managed to force a goalless draw against their opponents across town and Real Madrid had to do without Bale as  Lopetegui reveals that his withdrawal was precautionary at first.

"Gareth felt an issue in his abductor in the first half. It made sense to take him off for precaution. He will have tests, we will see what he actually has.” Lopetegui said.

The coach also rued lack of chance conversion against a team he describes as ‘great’ but also pointed out that injuries might have affected them negatively.

"Against a great team like Atletico Madrid, we pinned them back, created many more chances than they did, overcome the adversity and injuries we have and played a very good game. But if you do not score then, logically, you cannot win."

“We do not look at our rivals results, just at our own situation. This is a long, hard league, and each game has maximum difficulty for all the teams. We showed character, personality, pride and that is the path to follow in each game. If you do not show that, then you can have a fright.” the boss added.

Atletico capable of winning everything

"There are many games left to play. Atletico is a great team, have joined the elite with magnificent signings, have a spectacular squad. They are candidates to win everything, so I am happy as we were better than a great team tonight," the former Spain coach concluded.
