Raheem Sterling Apologises to Referee After Bizarre Penalty Decision

Raheem Sterling has apologised to Hungarian Referee Viktor Kassai after he duped him into awarding a comical penalty to Manchester City in the Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad on Wednesday 7th November.

During a match in which Pep Guardiola’s men outclassed their Ukrainian opponents, Sterling grabbed the headlines with what will go down in history as one of the worst penalties ever awarded in the Champions League.

With City a goal up in the first half, the winger burst into space in the opponent’s box and tripped himself as he tried to chip the ball over Shakhtar’s goalkeeper.

There was no contact whatsoever but still, experienced Kassai pointed to the spot with hat trick hero Gabriel Jesus burying the resulting penalty.

Sterling confessed in a post match interview that there was no contact, “I went to chip the ball and don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel contact. I scuffed the ball.

The penalty was of little significance at the end though as a hat trick from Gabriel Jesus and a goal each from Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Riyad Mahrez ensured city ran out 6-0 winners on the night.
