Loaned-Out Everton Striker Replaces Injured Ighalo in Nigeria Squad

08 Nov 2018, 21:15

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have suffered an injury blow to Odion Ighalo who has now been replaced by Henry Onyekuru for the 2019 AFCON Qualifier against South Africa.

Ighalo caught a hamstring injury whilst playing for Changchun Yatai of China on Wednesday. His replacement Onyekuru, loaned-out by Everton to Galatasaray, will come to the Super Eagles camp with two goals from 12 games in the Turkish Super Ligue.

Onyekuru has rather huge shoes to fill as Ighalo is Nigeria’s top scorer in the qualifying with six goals in four games.

The West Africans go into the next fixture sitting at the summit of  Group E followed by South Africa, Libya, and Seychelles.

Nigeria is due in Johannesburg to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana before the matchday on Saturday 17 November. The three-time African champions also welcome Uganda at home for a friendly three days later.

A win over South Africa will see Nigeria secure qualification to next year's AFCON in Cameroon.
