FKF President thanks fans, government ahead of AFCON 2019
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has thanked fans and the government for the role they played in ensuring the National team, Harambee Stars, qualifies for AFCON.
Kenya qualified for the most prestigious tournament in African Football after 15 years out and the President HE Uhuru Kenyatta took to social media to congratulate the National team and promised them full government support.
“I want to thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for committing to support the team (Harambee Stars) ahead of the upcoming AFCON,” said Mwendwa.
“Deputy President William Ruto also came through against Ethiopia and it is this support that propelled us to achieve this (AFCON Qualification) milestone,” he added.
Mwendwa also lauded the government for actualising the Sports Fund, saying it will go along way in ensuring the National teams are well taken care of.
“Our national teams need a consistent funding strategy for their future assignments. We believe the Sports Fund will come in handy,” he said.
Harambee Stars will play Ghana away, in their final qualifier before playing yet another build up a friendly match at home. Both matches are scheduled for March 2019.
The team will then head for a three-week camp later in May after the conclusion of the 2018/2019 leagues, where friendly matches have been scheduled to keep the players in shape ahead of AFCON.
