CAF CL: Former champions lay strategies to overcome group stage challenge
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Pitso Mosimane, is already laying strategies on how to overcome the group stage hurdles of this season’s CAF Champions League.
The Brazillians, as are fondly nicknamed, were pooled in group A with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, Lobi Stars of Nigeria and Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas.
Mosimane calculates that his team wins their three home games and then look for atleast two draws on the road.
“The most important thing in the Champions League is winning at home. The best thing you can do is win at home. We have to win at home. You’ve got to have a good start and hit the ground running with your home games,” Mosimane emphasized.
“You must also make sure that in the three games away, you at least get two draws. If you do that, you’re guaranteed qualification in the knockout stage.
Out of experience at the same stage, the coach knows well the threat posed by 2017 Champions, Wydad Casablanca and wants his boys to finish the job early before facing the Moroccans in the final group game.
“With how our games are structured, we’re going to play Wydad in our last match of the group. You don’t want to get to that match needing to get a result. You have to do what you need to do as early as possible.”
The two sides have met in each of the last three campaigns at an advanced stage.
