Juventus regained their nine-point lead at the summit of the Serie A table with a 3-0 hammering of bottom-placed Chievo with Cristiano Ronaldo having a torrid game as he missed a penalty in a clash staged at the Allianz Stadium on Monday 21st January.
Juventus were on a mission to regain back their nine-point lead in the Serie A table after Napoli beat Lazio 2-1 yesterday. The game was delayed for a few minutes with the assistant referee on the touchline fixing his communication kit.
Juventus got things underway and dominated possession right away but had to wait till the 12th minute to open the scoring when Paulo Dybala passed the ball to Douglas Costa but produced a bursting run to release a beauty of a left foot strike that found the back of the right bottom corner from 20yards, for his first goal of the season.
Massimiliano Allegri’s men doubled their lead one minute before the half time break when Dybala again set up Emre Can with a pass inside the penalty area and the former Liverpool midfielder tucked the ball into the bottom right corner for his first goal in Juventus colors.
Juventus were handed a penalty in the 52nd minute when Costa’s shot was handled by Mattia Bani inside the penalty area. Up stepped Cristiano Ronaldo who could hold his nerve as his effort was saved by 39-year-old goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino to prolong the Portuguese' torrid game after missing chances in the first half.
The tie was put to be in the 83rd minute when Sofian Kiyine brought down Blaise Matuidi on the byline next to the penalty area. Federico Bernardeschi delivered the resultant free-kick and picked up Daniele Rugani who rose highest to nod his free header into the net for his first goal of the season.
