EFL Championship club Middlesbrough are reportedly in talks with Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel over a potential deal in the ongoing January transfer window.

According to reports, Middlesbrough have maintained their interest in Mikel this month, with the midfielder returning to the North East for further discussions on Monday, January 21.

The Chelsea legend held initial talks with Boro last week but those negotiations were not fruitful.

Mikel is said to be keen on an England return after mutually terminating his contract with Tianjin Teda earlier this month and Crystal Palace have also been credited with an interest in the Nigeria number ten.

The 31-year-old won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, one Europa League Cup and one Champions League during the ten years he spent at Chelsea.

Chelsea chose not to renew Mikel's contract at the end of the 2016/17 season and he was free to join Tianjin Teda on a free transfer in January 2017 after 372 appearances for the Blues.
