The Premier Soccer League has greenlighted Stuart Baxter’s request to postpone fixtures in favour of Bafana Bafana’s preparation for the huge AFCON qualifier against Libya.
South Africa will battle Libya to determine their qualification for the 2019 AFCON edition that will kick off in Egypt in June.
Baxter’s team need a draw in what will be an away fixture in March, while the Libyans will be fighting for three points in order to advance to the finals.
“When I started my job as national team coach, I always preached cooperation among stakeholders, and this is proof that when we come together we can do what’s best for the nation,” Baxter said in a statement.
“With all the preparations already in place, we know just how difficult it was for the PSL and the clubs to accede to our request, and we are eternally grateful for this gesture as it means a lot,” he concluded.
The match is set for 22 March and due to the long-running political turmoil in Libya, the game will be staged in either Tunisia or Egypt.
