CAF CL: Onyango concedes as Sundowns ascend to group summit
Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango was in goal as Mamelodi Sundowns brushed ASEC Mimosa 3-1 in a match day three of the 2018-19 CAF Champions league played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Mousa Lebusa headed the Brazilians into the lead just after ten minutes when he rose high, unmarked, to answer Gaston Sirino’s asking cross.
The scorer turned villain four minutes later when he pushed an opponent inside the danger zone with the centre referee pointing to the spot. Onyango guessed the direction right but the kick taken by Ahmed Herve Diamonde was a bit far from his stretch.
The hosts’ skipper Hlompho Kekana came close to doubling the lead with a thunderous effort from a free kick in the 55th but his attempt rattled the crossbar and bounced out.
The Brazilians reorganised and returned seconds later with a sleeky move finding its way to Lakay in the left side of the box. The forward split his pass in between the keeper and the Ivorian defence to find Themba Zwane who potted it home.
Onyango nearly conceded the second as the game dawned after failing to handle tricky low shot but Lebusa came to the rescue and cleared off.
Argentine Emiliano Tade, who was signed in the January window, capped his debut with a last minute goal to kill any hopes of an ASEC comeback.
Sundowns move to the top of group A with six points three above Wydad Casablanca, ASEC and Lobi Stars.
