Zenit were handed a route back into the game when the referee awarded them a penalty after Sebastian Driussi was brought down by Mehmet Topal inside the box. Up stepped Roberto Mak who failed to hold his nerve as Harun Tekin produced a spectacular save to pushed the ball onto the crossbar before he gathered the ball in the nick of time.
The second half had chances few and far between with Zenit on a mission of damage limitation heading into the second leg of the clash. Fenerbache also attacked with caution avoiding to concede the much dreaded away goal that would Zenit the advantage.
