Former Arsenal star Abou Diaby retires from football

26 Feb 2019, 00:10

Former Arsenal star Abou Diaby has retired from football at the age of 32.

Diaby joined Arsenal from Auxerre in 2006 with Arsene Wenger exuding a lot of confidence in him where he touted the Frenchman as the next Patrice Vieira.

"I'm retiring from my professional career. For a certain amount of time, it has been hard for me to get back onto the field. I have had quite a few injuries. I decided to retire because my body could not keep up. I had a lot of physical problems. At one point, you have to ask the right questions. I decided to stop simply because the body was not following. It's difficult because I have spent most of my life playing football," he told television channel RMC Sport.

Diaby made just 198 club appearances in total during a senior career that ran across 14-and-a-half years. He suffered 42 separate injuries while with Arsenal before moving to Marseille in 2015 but his last match came the following year and he left in 2017 having only played six matches.
