Top 10 CAF nations rankings before this weekend, Senegal top, where’s Kenya, Uganda, Ghana & SA?
This weekend will be the conclusion of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers ahead of the tournament in June. With rankings set to change after this weekend, Futaa looks at the current top 10 rankings by nation.
Senegal’s Lions of Teranga’s decent efforts at the 2018 World Cup helped them to overtake the likes of Tunisia and Morocco at the top, and further results in the second half last year made sure the West Africans maintain top spot as Africa’s big cats.
But who's on Senegal's heels? Where are the likes of Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and SA?
CAF Top 10 via FIFA’s website:
- Senegal 1505 points
- Tunisia 1493 points
- Morocco 1440 points
- Nigeria 1427 points
- Congo DR 1420 points
- Ghana 1412 points
- Cameroon 1394 points
- Egypt 1393 points
- Burkina Faso 1371 points
Mali 1363 points
Southern & East African nations outside the top 10:
14. South Africa
But , how are the rankings determined, here's FIFA Statement released in 2018:
"SUM" as it relies on adding/subtracting points won or lost for a game to/from the previous point totals rather than averaging game points over a given time period as in the previous version of the World Ranking.
The points which are added or subtracted are partially determined by the relative strength of the two opponents, including the logical expectation that teams higher in the ranking should fare better against teams lower in the ranking."
