Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has suggested that Rotherham United defensive midfielder Semi Ajayi could be in the starting XI ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Seychelles in Friday, March 22.
Football Live reported that Ajayi is currently in his best form at Rotherham where he has scored six goals in five matches which has seen him claim the top spot on the latest English Championship player rankings.
However, the dilemma for Rohr will in which position to line Ajayi out, as the player has moved from being a central defender to an effective defensive midfielder with his club, who are fighting for survival in England’s second-tier division.
However, Ajayi played at right-back in his debut for the Eagles, which was in the first leg away to Seychelles, but the full-back positions and holding midfield appear already taken over by better-grounded players and more experienced players of the national team.
Nonetheless, it will be up to Rohr to see how he keeps his promise, after declaring emphatically that he is impressed with what he has seen of the former Flying Eagles invitee in recent time and believes the lad can replicate such for in the green-and-white.
Rohr stated: “Since he came with us in that match against Seychelles, he progressed so much, just as I see now even in his club.
“I am very happy to see him again and there is a good chance he could start in the match against Seychelles.”
