AFCON Q: Nigeria stamp authority on Group E with win over Seychelles

22 Mar 2019, 19:50

Nigeria have stamped authority on AFCON Qualifiers Group E after registering a 3-1 win over Seychelles.

They will remain, leaders of the group irrespective of the result that will come after Libya and South Africa game. Seychelles occupy the last position of the group.

Goal

Odion Ighalo gave Nigeria the lead in the 33rd minute from the spot as Karl Hall fouled his opponent in the box. Hall received the yellow card as Ighalo more to take the penalty that gave the Super Eagles the lead at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta.

Equalizer

Uzoho's misjudgement gave the visitors enough space to equalize just four minutes to half time break. The Nigerian goalkeeper came out to claim a free kick and punched it towards Rody Melanie who took no time to slot the ball into an almost empty net behind Uzoho.

Chances for Nigeria in the first minutes of the match fell to Wilfred Ndidi, Etebo and Ighalo while there was just one open chance for the Islanders that Omeruo cleared in time to keep Nigeria safe from their visitor's attacks.

Lead

Nigeria restored their lead in the 51st minute when Henry Onyenkuru headed Collins Jamilu's chip. Ah-Kong was helpless in dealing with Nigeria's move this time around as the ball was moved from left flank to the right one in quick succession.

The Super Eagles added their third goal in front of own fans in the 85th minute as Moses Simon made maximum use of a good cross into the box by Jamilu.

Nigeria have already qualified for the AFCON championship that is set to be played in Egypt after a 1-1 draw against South Africa in the last group game. In the reverse fixture, against Seychelles, Nigeria won 3-0.

Nigeria starting XI: Uzoho, Shehu, Omeruo, Troost-Ekong, Jamilu; Ndidi, Etebo, Musa; Onyekuru, Iwobi, Ighalo.

Seychelles starting XI: Ah-Kong, Manoo, Marie, Mellie, Fanchette, Saminadin, Waye-Hive, Melanie, Padayachy, Hall, Nancy.
