Barcelona star Lionel Messi has slammed the club's fans for attacking Philippe Coutinho after their 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Messi was in mesmerising form during the match and helped his side grab the all-important victory, scoring twice and controlling the match, especially in the second half.

Fans booed and whistled when the less impressive former Liverpool man was withdrawn on the half-hour mark, and the Argentine termed it 'ugly'.

"This is a time when we have to be more united than ever, both as players and fans. This is something we have to achieve together and it is not the moment to criticise anybody. It is ugly to see [the crowd] treat a team-mate like that," Messi said moments after full-time.

The Brazilian was signed from Liverpool in a deal worth €160 million but has largely struggled to fit into Ernesto Valverde's tactical designs at Camp Nou.

His lack of game time in the La Liga and the 'inability' to fit into the Blaugrana system has led to transfer speculations, with the likes of PSG and even Manchester United mooted as possible destinations.
