Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has hailed Chelsea midfielder Reuben Loftus-Cheek, after an impressive performance in their 1-1 Europa League semifinal first-leg draw away to Frankfurt.

Hargreaves labelled Loftus 'best player on the pitch', after an assured performance in the middle of the back.

Speaking to BT Sport, Hargreaves said: "I think Ruben deserves special praise for his performance tonight,"

"In a semi-final, as a 23-year-old… he was Chelsea’s best player. I thought he was terrific, in the second half I thought Chelsea were terrific as a whole actually. The first 30 minutes they were surprised by Frankfurt’s intensity but they grew in the game and could have had a second goal," he added.

The home team took the lead on 23 minutes when Serbia Luka Jovic skillfully guided the ball past Arrizabalaga off the post, but Pedro equalised for the visitors on the stroke of halftime for a 1-1 score.

Chelsea takes a vital away goal back to Stamford Bridge ahead of the return leg, knowing only a win or a scoreless draw will see them book a spot in the finals.

Focus now shifts to the English Premier League, where they will host Watford on Sunday as the race for a top-four finish heats up.
