Saturday has almost finally arrived. Will the champions be Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates? Will Kaizer Chiefs limp into the MTN 8? Who will drop down to the National First Division between Maritzburg United, Chippa United, Free State Stars and Black Leopards?
As Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic said last week, Mathematics is a simple science. The Sea Robbers will win the title if they defeat Polokwane City and Sundowns draw or lose to Free State Stars. If both sides win, Sundowns will be South Africa’s champions.
Top eight push
As in every season, the top eight teams in SA’s 16 team PSL have a special incentive. It comes in the form of the MTN8 Cup. The said tournament is also special for being the easiest to win. Starting at a quarter-finals stage, a club wins one game before competing in the two-legged semi-finals ahead of battling in the final.
Clubs who can quality this Saturday:
- Kaizer Chiefs
- Highlands Park
- Bloemfontein Celtic
- Golden Arrows.
There will be no emotional and frantic battles like we will see in Limpopo, Free State and the Eastern Cape. An astonishing list of five clubs are 90 minutes away from suddenly finding themselves out of South Africa’s elite division. One club will be dumped straight down, while the second-last finisher will have a second shot in the play-off against the NFD’s second and third finishers: Royal Eagles and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.
Relegation fighter’s fixtures:
- Baroka FC vs Maritzburg United
- Free State Stars vs Mamelodi Sundowns
- Chippa United vs Kaizer Chiefs
- Black Leopards vs Kaizer Chiefs.
