How Sundowns won the league with three losses, 11 draws

Mamelodi Sundowns became Absa Premiership champions for the ninth time last Saturday. Futaa traces every match result from August 2018 to May 2019.

Much was said about Sundowns’ unforgiving schedule that involved the rigours of Africa in the CAF Champions League. As much as the continental travels took their toll on the players and staff (trips to Cairo, and Abidjan & Rabat), Kabo Yellow still slogged to the finish line as the best team in Mzansi.

So, how did they do it?

Was the defending for clean sheets very tidy? How did they respond after lost games? When was the most sparkling run of form?

August to October 2018

The first three months of Kabo Yellow’s season was never a flying start. The side picked up only three wins in seven. However the defending was quite ordery: five goals conceded in seven.

Results:

    • Sundowns 1:1 Kaizer Chiefs
    • Polokwane City 0:2 Sundowns
    • Sundowns 0:0 Highlands Park
    • Sundowns 3:3 AmaZulu FC
    • Golden Arrows 0:1 Sundowns
    • Bloemfontein Celtic 0:0 Sundowns
    • Sundowns 1:1 Bidvest Wits
  • Chippa United 0:1 Sundowns

November to December 2019

Late spring and the break of summer meant a bright spell for Sundowns. Not a loss was tasted in four battles. Two wins and two draws came with just two goals touching Sundowns’ net.

Results:

    • Sundowns 3:1 Free State Stars
  • Sundowns 0:0 Orlando Pirates
  • SuperSport United 1:2 Sundowns
  • Sundowns 0:0 Baroka FC

January to March 2019

As most coaches have always preached, the most telling part of the season comes in the new year and through March. The flow of fixtures gets relentless, players & teams lose form, injuries are sustained and poor results have to be accepted. But not for Sundowns. The likes of Pirates and Wits watched on in astonishment as the Pretoria giants lost only two games in 11.

Results:

    • Kaizer Chiefs 1:2 Sundowns
    • Sundowns 1:0 Maritzburg United
    • Highlands Park 1:2 Sundowns
    • Sundowns 0:2 AmaZulu
    • Sundowns 3:0 Black Leopards
    • Sundowns 3:2 Cape Town City
    • Sundowns 1:1 Polokwane City
    • Wits 1:1 Sundowns
    • Sundowns 0:0 Celtic
    • Cape Town City 2:1 Sundowns
  • Maritzburg 1:2 Sundowns

April to May 2019

With the side in the height of the CAF Champions League and fatigue creeping in, Sundowns nevertheless kept collecting more W’s than L’s. An ugly draw at title-contenders Pirates at the start of April, as well as a shock loss to SuperSport was quickly killed off with four straight wins. The final 16 points culminated in the championship in Bethlehem last weekend. Champions!

Results:

  • Pirates 0:0 Sundowns
  • Black Leopards 1:2 Sundowns
  • Sundowns 0:2 SuperSport
  • Baroka 1:2 Sundowns
  • Sundowns 3:2 Chippa
  • Sundowns 2:0 Golden Arrows
  • Free State Stars 0:1 Sundowns
