Nzoia stun Gor in Mumias as AFC Leopards' slump continues

15 May 2019, 17:00

Gor Mahia failed to take the chance to inch even closer to defending their Kenya Premier League title, after losing 1-0 away to Nzoia Sugar on Wednesday afternoon.

The defending champions went into the match on the back of a sweet 2-0 win against closest title challengers Sofapaka but failed to make the match-at-hand chance count.

The game started on a low note with no clear-cut chances in the opening minutes but picked the pace as the clock ticked.

Nzoia almost took the lead on the eighth minute, when Hansel Ochieng was put through on goal but missed slightly to score from close range.

Nzoia takes lead

After a couple of missed chances, Hansel Ochieng redeemed himself in the 34th minute to give the hosts the lead.

Gor missed a golden chance to score on 42 minutes before Sempala’s freekick from the edge of the box went over the bar on the stroke of halftime as the teams went for the break with the hosts leading 1-0.

The match resumed in the second half with Gor showing the urgency to grab an equalizer, but Nzoia held on as both teams struggled to contain the midfield.

Second goal

The home team thought they had scored a second in the 72 minute through Otieno Patrick, but the assistant referee flagged him for offside to the disappointment of the fans.

There was little action on both ends of the posts as Nzoia held out for the precious three points, while Gor, who are in no danger of losing their title will wait for longer before they fully have the prize in their hands.

Gor next plays archrivals AFC Leopards, with Nzoia hosts Sofapaka.

KCB shock AFC

In another match, AFC Leopards' recent slump in form continued, after they too suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to KCB in another Premier League match.

Owino Kennedy scored the all-important goal for the Bankers, as they registered an impressive win over Ingwe.

The win helps them retain their 11th position on the log, while Leopards are placed ninth behind Ulinzi Stars.

'Revived' Zoo

Zoo made it two wins in a row at their Kericho Grounds, after beating Western Stima 2-1 in another KPL match.

The win was an important achievement as they push to avoid relegation, and it comes on the back of an impressive 2-1 win over Ulinzi last weekend.

They are currently placed 16th on the table, three points ahead of Vihiga United.
