In what’s our daily player profile feature here on Futaa, today our attention is on Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea forward Heung-min Son.

We mostly know and love Son for his big smile and very honest style of play.

But there’s more to confirm and discover…

Player bio 📖

  • Age: 26
  • Club: Tottenham Hotspur
  • Position: Forward
  • Estimated transfer value: £58.50m

Early days 👶🏻

Born in the northern city of South Korea, Chuncheon. The man Son calls his father was an ex-footballer turned manager. Son received his primary football education at FC Seoul. He later made the 13-hour flight to Germany’s Hamburger. Son was 17 when he joined Hamburger SV's youth academy through Korea Football Association Youth Project. His talent soon allowed him to earn a €10 million move to Bayer Leverkusen which was eventually followedo by a £22 million departure to join Spurs in 2015.

Strengths 💪🏻

Not so long ago, Spurs’ main men were Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane. The trio often enjoyed high praise as Spurs’ brilliant match-winners. This was until Son Heung-min quietly established himself until he was suddenly not underrated anymore.

Son’s 20 goals and 10 assists in 47 games this season - is all thanks to his explosive & direct pace, positional sense and skill to shoot with both feet. The Asian’s relentless running and overall work-rate allows him to find and win space to play. Add his close control and clinical finishing and you have a deadly forward.

Weaknesses 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s true no player comes without any weak points, and often, those are connected to their strengths. With Son being a very direct runner towards goal, he’s often been let down by failing to see or miss passes to others in better positions. Crossing and those defence-splitting short passes is something he needs to work on to become an elite forward.
