Gor Mahia crowned Kenya Premier League Champions

22 May 2019, 18:05

Gor Mahia have for the third time in a row defended their Kenya Premier League title, despite a 1-1 draw against Vihiga United at the Machakos Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

K’Ogalo went into the match knowing that a win would be enough to see them over the line and claim a third consecutive Premier League trophy with two matches to spare.

The result in Machakos, coupled with Bandari's draw against Mathare meant Gor's lead at the top of the table was unassailable, and mathematically the Dockers would not match or better their tally.

The Hassan Oktay-led charges got off the blocks from the kickoff, and it came as no surprise when they took the lead in the 13th minute through the experienced Charles Momanyi.

Momanyi, who came in for the missing Joash Onyango got to the end of a superb free-kick delivery to beautifully nod home the opener.

The Gor Mahia midfiled, led by Kenneth Muguna and Francis Kahata, was too much to handle for Vihiga, as they totally dominated play in the middle of the park.

Gor seemed to tweak their formation a little bit, with Tuyisenge playing more on the right wing, while Philemon Ochieng sat back more, choosing not to overlap as he is used to.

Tuyisenge came close to grabbing a second for Gor after a nice play-in ball that he took superbly but his last shot went wide.

The defending champions kept threatening and were the more dangerous side, but could not add to their tally as they both went into the break with Gor leading 1-0.

Second half

Gor picked the second half from where they left off in the first half, with the frontline of Tuyisenge, Kipkirui and Samuel Onyango all coming close to grabbing a second in the first 10 min of the second half.

Amos Kigadi, however, surprised Gor in the 56th minute, heading home the equalizer against the run of play to level scores.

Buoyed by the goal, Vihiga poured forward in search of a second, time and again threatening the Gor midfield.

However, Gor weathered the storm and took control of the match once again, and came close to scoring on numerous occasions.

The match tempo, however, went down, and Vihiga managed to hold on for the draw, earning themselves a precious point that might prove crucial in the relegation battle.

Gor will now keep the trophy for good, having won in it three times in a row.
