Arjen Robben reveals why Pep Guardiola failed to win the Champions League at Bayern Munich

24 May 2019, 13:00

With Arjen Robben set to end his 10-year stay at Bayern Munich in the summer, the Dutch winger has revealed that Pep Guardiola failed to win the Champions League in his time in Germany because of injuries.

Guardiola managed Bayern between 2013 and 2016, winning three consecutive Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. The Spanish tactician failed to progress to the final of the Champions League in his three seasons at the Allianz Arena as he exited at the semi-final hurdle in all the seasons he was in charge.

In an interview with Goal, Robben revealed that injuries hampered Guardiola's chances of winning the Champions League, "Pep has established a very special style of play here. He is football crazy in a positive way. We were unlucky with injuries [in the Champions League]. You will never know what would have happened if everyone had been fit.

"Back then we were so strong that there was certainly more possible. I am really sorry that it did not work. Some say Pep was not successful in Munich because he did not win the Champions League. I do not represent this opinion.

"Under Pep, we played wonderful football and were three times in the Champions League semi-final. I know that coaches are also judged on titles, but I’m someone who looks outside the box. Football is not always fair."
