What's Felix's story so far? 🇵🇹
João Félix had risen through the Porto youth ranks before moving across to Benfica's youth and B projects in 2015. For Benfica B he wasn't prolific in terms of his goal-scoring, but in 2018/2019 he made a staggering breakthrough to the first season, bagging 15 goals and assisting seven more in the Portuguese league. That number became 18 goals and eight assists across all competitions.
Although he didn't shine on his debut last night against Switzerland, time is very much on his side and he'll want to make immediate amends in the final against either The Netherlands or Switzerland.
Playing style & strengths 🥊
Considered to be one of the most promising youth products to have come out of Portugal since Cristiano Ronaldo, there's an understandable level of hype around the youngster. Touted as a player that can take up Ronaldo's mantle, Félix is actually more of an attacking midfielder than a forward, not that his goal output last season would suggest that.
Félix has received comparisons to former Benfica players Rui Costa and João Pint because of his silky ability on the ball and great off-the-ball movement. Félix is adept at finding teammates with smart passes, through balls and he also likes to dribble and keep hold of the ball. He can also finish and take shots from range, making him the complete package as a versatile attacker.
Felix has no significant weaknesses in the technical areas, but he may have to bulk up a bit if he wants to become an elite striker or number 9. That being said, Felix's future might be on the wings or just behind a main focal point striker or as a creative midfielder who can score and provide goals.
