The Netherlands needed extra-time to book a place in the finals after a 3-1 win over England with goals coming from Matthijs de Ligt, a Kyle Walker own goal as Quincy Promes scored the final goal. England opened the scoring from the penalty spot when Marcus Rashford converted after he was brought down by de Ligt. In the other semi-finals, a hat-trick from Ronaldo dumped Switzerland out of the tournament after a 3-1 loss.

Speaking after the win over England, Van Dijk revealed that Portugal have various threats apart from Ronaldo, "We'll see. It's not only Cristiano Ronaldo we're going to face, we face a great Portugal. We will see what's going to happen. I'm looking forward to playing this final with this team, and we're going to give everything that we can to hopefully hold that trophy in the end and do everyone proud."
