Bernardo Silva and Frenkie de Jong win Nations League awards
A hat-trick by Cristiano Ronaldo in the semi-finals against Switzerland could not earn him the UEFA Nations League Player of the Tournament as Bernardo Silva beat him to it while Frenkie de Jong picked the best young player award.
Silva assisted the winner in the final as Goncalo Guedes scored at the stroke of the hour mark to lift Portugal past the Netherlands and also set up one of Ronaldo’s goals in the semi-final. Meanwhile, Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who already completed a transfer to FC Barcelona, was named Young Player of the Tournament, with players born after 1 January 1996 being eligible for this award.
Ronaldo, however, bagged the top scorer award after scoring three goals in the knock out phases.
