With Harambee Stars, head coach Sebastien Migne naming his squad for the upcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, Futaa looks at the profiles of the players who will represent Kenya in the continental showpiece.
Philemon Omondi Otieno
DOB: October 18, 1992
Current Club: Gor Mahia, Kenya
Previous Clubs: Ushuru FC (Kenya), Mahakama (Georgia), Mathare Youth (Albania)
If the left back position is one, we not short in, then the exact opposite should be said on the opposite flank. With the national team having failed to find a natural right back in the right-back position after trials with David Owino, Brain Mandela and Musa Mohammed (who are all centre backs), Philemon will be the man tasked to man this position in Egypt.
Another versatile player who right back role has been a result of fortunes in his club Gor Mahia. Naturally a defensive midfielder, Otieno made the right position his after the long-term injury to Burundian Karim Nizigiyamana last year.
The player spent a chunk of his early career playing in the Kenyan second tier, the National Super League, where he represented Ushuru FC this after stints with Mathare Youth and Mahakama FC. He joined Gor Mahia in 2017 and took his chances when they came.
He might be up against tougher players in the competition going by the opponents Harambee Stars will be up against in the group stage but his continental experience with his club will come in handy. The big stage in Egypt shouldn’t be a surprise for him.
