Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has renamed the National Stadium, Abuja to MKO Abiola Stadium.
Buhari made this pronouncement during his speech at the Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
The stadium has been unsuded for over a decade due to its poor state caused by abandonment.
June 12 was on Monday officially declared as Democracy Day as a mark of honour to Abiola, the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election.
In his speech at the event, which also marks Nigeria’s 20th year of uninterrupted democracy, Mr Buhari said the national stadium will henceforth be known as Moshoo Abiola Stadium.
“I declared June 12 in memory of late Abiola and gave honour to him … and I have also named the Abuja Stadium after Late Moshood Abiola,” the president announced.
Abiola was a Nigerian politician, believed to have won a presidential election in 1993, but later died after the election was annuled.
