Kotoko end Hearts' Champions League dream

17 Jun 2019, 12:40

Asante Kotoko are on the brink of CAF Champions League qualification after they beat rivals Hearts of Oak 5-4 on penalties in the Normalisation Committee's Special Competition Tier One semi-final clash played at the  Accra Sports Stadium.

The win booked them a berth in the finals, where they will meet Karela United, who saw off AshGold 1-0 in the other semifinal match played at the Len Clay Stadium.

Mohammed Alhassan missed his kick for Hearts, with Kotoko skipper Amos Frimpong scoring the winning kick for the visitors and end their hosts' seven-game unbeaten run at home.

In the match, which was attended by over 30,000 fans, the visitors took the lead inside five minutes by Adul Safiu after a sleek pass from Naby Keita.

The hosts, however, had to wait until the 94th minute to grab the equaliser, with the referee awarding a penalty after Adul Ismail was adjudged to have handled in the box, which Christopher Bonney tucked to restore parity.

There was little time for any goal as the match ended 1-1 in regulation time before the visitors won on penalties.

The winner will represent the country in this year’s CAF Champions League.
