What's Wanyama's story so far? 🇰🇪
Victor Wanyama started his professional career at Beerschot in Belgium, before making his first big move to Glasgow Celtic in Scotland, and that's where the football world really started to take notice of his talents. His arrival in the Premier League was confirmed in 2013 at Southampton here he became a key figure under Mauricio Pochettino, forming a dynamic partnership with Morgan Schneiderlin at the heart of the Saints midfield.
A move to Tottenham would follow in 2016, with Mauricio Pochettino recruiting the Kenyan star to become a key part of his new managerial project, one he started two years prior. With Pochettino's reputation in the game growing by the day and his fondness of Wanyama's skills, it's clear that the defensive midfielder is a high-quality operator at the highest level.
Wanyama was selected to start Tottenham's dramatic 3-2 win in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal at Ajax, only to disappointingly lose his place for the final. His focus will now shift to leading Kenya with distinction at AFCON 2019.
Playing style & strengths 🥊
Wanyama is a tall, powerful, mobile and tactically intelligent defensive midfielder that excels in aerial duels and most physical challenges on the ground. He shows excellent timing and strength in the tackle and is happy to keep things simple in possession with his excellent short passing game. He also has the confidence and technical ability to evade challenges with a dribble or a smart touch. Wanyama, simply put, is perfectly suited to the physical pressing style of Tottenham's football.
He doesn't have any significant weaknesses in his technical game, but Wanyama can be found wanting when it comes to his recovery pace on the turn when chasing opponents to get the ball back. He doesn't get nearly enough goals, although when he does score it can be in spectacular fashion. Remember his screamer against Liverpool?
We will keep a close eye on the Harambee Stars skipper as Kenya does battle in AFCON 2019 Group C.
