Carlo Cudicini backs Frank Lampard for Chelsea job

Carlo Cudicini has backed Frank Lampard for the vacant managerial role at Chelsea, saying he can be a 'fantastic' manager.

The Derby County manager is considered the favourite to take over reigns at the club, which was left vacant after the departure of Maurizio Sarri, who took over at Juventus.

“It’s hard to give an opinion until the club have announced a new manager,” Cudicini told Standard Sport after featuring for Chelsea Legends in a 5-4 loss against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

“But I know Frank, I played with Frank. I think that, for the club, it would be fantastic. He has just started his career, but in football, you can’t really plan much. Sometimes, a chance comes along and if you have the chance, you have to take it,"

Lampard's first year in management was a huge success, guiding the Rams to a second place finish in the Championship and losing 2-1 in the Playoffs finals against Aston Villa.

If given the role, he will replace the Italian who had an indifferent yet successful season at the club, having signed off with Europa League trophy and a third-place finish in the English Premier League.

He, however, didn't settle well at the Bridge, and fans were never convinced by his system of play, especially when results were not coming the club's way.
