AFCON 2019 Preview: Can Nigeria sneak past defending champions Cameroon

Defending Champions Cameroon will take on Nigeria on Saturday 6th in the round of 16 knock out stage Africa Cup of Nations clash at Alexandria Stadium. 

Route to R16 

Cameroon missed the opportunity of topping group F due to lack of sharpness up front. The holders managed to score two goals from the three matches played. The two goals came from their 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau in their first match which was followed by goalless draws against and Benin. 

Nigeria, the three-time winners of the tournament have not been at their best neither as they had a setback short defeat in their final match. Shockingly Madagascar beat the Super Eagles 2-0 which saw them finish in the second position in Group B. Nigeria had started the tournament well picking six points following their 1-0 win against Burundi and  Guinea.

Head to head 

Cameroon have failed to beat Nigeria in their last five meetings losing three while suffering two defeats in the process. The Super Eagles triumphed 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 AFCON courtesy of a superb freekick from Nigerian Legend Jay-Jay Okocha.

Nigeria also recorded a 4-0 victory during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with Odion Ighalo and John Mikel Obi finding the net.
