Derby County show interest in Wolves' Cavaleiro
According to reports, Derby County are keen on signing Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Ivan Cavaleiro.
Cavaleiro joined Wolves for a then club record fee of £7 million in August 2016, signing a five-year contract. After a slow start, he gradually became an important figure during the club’s 2017/18 promotion.
The Portuguese attacker netted nine goals during Wolves’ Championship-winning season. However, he made just six Premier League starts last term, prompting question marks over his future.
Derby have a small squad after a summer upheaval. Manager Frank Lampard has been replaced by Phillip Cocu, and the former PSV Eindhoven head coach has set his stall on playing a 4-3-3 system this season.
The departures of players such as David Nugent, Bradley Johnson, Craig Bryson, Harry Wilson, and Mason Mount leave the club short of options in the front six positions.
Cavaleiro can play in several attacking roles, including on both flanks. He would provide Derby with a spark, and he could be an ideal candidate to replace the 18 goals Liverpool’s Harry Wilson netted on loan last term.
Derby must strengthen this summer, but it remains to be seen what sort of budget Cocu is allowed to work with now after the Rams’ previous big spending under Mel Morris’s ownership of the club.
