Manchester United are in contention to table an offer valued at approximately £72million for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer.
Sky Sports have reported that United are ready to make the bid for the Serbian with immediate effect - he was also a summer target under Jose Mourinho.
However, instead of completing the move then, the Red Devils went on to sign Fred and were not set on bringing onboard another midfielder unless Marouane Fellaini left. The latter has since departed for Shandong Lueng in the Chinese Super League.
This comes as good news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks to bolster his midfield which could free up a move Milinkovic-Savic.
But who is the 24-year-old and what can he offer United?
Milinkovic-Savic came through the youth ranks at FK Vojvodina in Serbia, making his debut in 2013. He only made 16 first team appearances, scoring four times and winning the Serbia Cup, before a £900,000 move to Genk in Belgium.
Another relatively short spell followed as Lazio came in after just 24 appearances. The midfielder was bought for £16.2m, where he has featured 162 times in a four-year spell.
He was named Serie A midfielder of the year for the 2018/19 season just gone.
Internationally, Milinkovic-Savic has 12 appearances for Serbia, as well as winning the 2013 European U19 Championships and 2015 U20 World Cup.
What has piqued United's interest?
Mourinho was the manager who initially sparked interest in the midfielder and was seen watching the Serbia international against Montenegro in October 2018.
With Paul Pogba set to depart from Old Trafford, United may be forced to look into the market for a central midfielder, however, it seems like the club has no intention of selling the France international. With that said, it would be wise for the club to look for other options as a backup.
Sky Sports initially reported that United would bid £72million with no doubt for the 24-year-old, but Lazio president Claudio Lotitio is reportedly sticking to his initial asking price of £90million for the player who extended his contract till 2023 respectively.
The report further suggested that the player would like to join the English club but will not force a move that might not come easy - and will be happy to spend another year playing at Lazio.
