New Sundowns striker Affonso impressed by club's record goalscorers

Brand new Mamelodi Sundowns striker Mauricio Affonso is inspired by the club’s past top goalscorers.

After joining Kabo Yellow last month on a four-year deal, Affonso has now had a feel Mzansi during the club’s Rustenburg camp.

“I am excited and I think I am adjusting well so far. The coach gave me 45 minutes, and I almost got a goal as well,” Affonso told the Sundowns website.

“I believe my teammates will push me as well, because the level of skill here is very good.”

The 1.94 meters tall Uruguayan also revealed having gone out to look up Sundowns’ former strikers’ records… and he is impressed.

“I have looked at the scoring record of previous top goal-scorers for the club, and it is very impressive. So, I hope to be part of that history,” he added.

Sundowns’ all-time scorers:

1. Daniel Mudau: 155 in 351 games
2. Katlego Mphela 50 in 122 games
3. Raphael Chukwu 46 in 85 games
4. Khama Billiat 47 in 140 games
5. Surprise Moriri 34 in 169 games

“And I want to experience the continent as well, because I have heard a lot of stories, but I want to see it for myself when the season starts.”

“I feel a little bit more settled now. I have found where I am going to stay and I can’t wait for the season to start, so I can contribute to the team’s success.”

“I have also spoken to the coach about what he expects of me this season," concluded Affonso.

Sundowns begin the new season against SuperSport United on Saturday 3 August 2019 at Lucas Moripe.
