Matthijs de Ligt reveals why he rejected a move to Barcelona
New Juventus summer signing Matthijs de Ligt has revealed why he turned down a move to Barcelona after being linked with the Spanish champions.
After seeing his future become the subject of much speculation over recent months, De Ligt finally brought a long-running saga to a close by turning down moves to Manchester United, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. The Dutch international completed his move to Juventus last week in a deal worth £68m for five years.
The former Ajax defender revealed why he did not fancy a move to Barcelona, "There were indeed many people who advised me to go to Barcelona. But I said to myself: ‘Put everything together and see what is best for me’. Of course I can listen to all those opinions, but I’m the one who makes the choice.
"(Frenkie) De Jong and I have often talked about what we were going to do. We have been very transparent with each other. It would have been great if we had played together, but our careers should not depend on each other’s decision.
"Everyone has their own career. I have looked at all the pros and cons and have crossed things out. Ultimately, you have to feel good about the club that suits you. I had that feeling with Juventus."
